A glass of red wine is the perfect pick me up after these long winter days. Whether you’re trudging the freezing streets of town, or can’t feel your fingers after shoveling your driveway, have a bottle of your favorite red wine waiting for you at home to look forward to! Throughout the month of January, we will be sharing with you our favorite reds – what we’d like to call our “Fireside Wines”… perfect for winter drinking!
Cold weather and icy conditions practically cry out for a big and robust red, something with the body and structure to stand up to hearty winter fare, but also something with the fruit, weight and richness to warm the bones on the very coldest of evenings. Which begs the question- which red wine to choose from? With such a bevy of styles and flavors the options are endless, but since we can’t give you endless options, we have narrowed it down to a few of our favorites:
Armas de Guerra Tinto
Energetic aromas of fresh blue fruits, violet and white pepper, plus a subtle touch of licorice. Supple and gently sweet on the palate, offering sappy boysenberry and floral pastille flavors and a hint of smokiness. Shows very good focus and power on the sweet, seamless finish, with building tannins adding shape.
Its aroma reminds of spices, with some balsamic notes and a toasted background. In the mouth it is wide, well-structured and balanced. Its tannins are present but well integrated. It has a very fresh acidity. This is a wine with a great personality and a long after-taste.
K Vintners The Hidden Syrah
One of the most impressive Syrahs from Washington is Smith’s The Hidden, which comes all from the Northridge Vineyard on the Wahluke Slope. Jaw-dropping good notes of black and blue fruits, ground pepper, violets, lavender and smoked meats, voluptuously textured and full-bodied.
Domaine Faury Collines Rhodaniennes Syrah
Syrah Collines Rhodaniennes from Faury is a juicy, lively, berry-fruited and floral effort that’s reminiscent of mid-weight Cote Rotie.

Each sip delivers a mouthful of ripe berries, leather and black pepper with subtle hints of oregano, dried herbs and a touch of vanilla; all leading to a dry and supple finish.
Benevelli Piero Barolo “Ravera” 2012
Deep red with light orange glints. Hints of violet, plum, vanilla, cinnamon and liquorice. On the palate; warm, full-bodied balanced, persistent and complex.
Shinas Estate “The Guily” Shiraz 2013
Energetic on the palate, with smoky dark fruit and floral pastille flavors lifted and sharpened by juicy acidity. Fine-grained tannins give shape to the long, sappy, appealigly sweet finish, with the spice repeating.
#Poggio Anima “Lilith” Salento IGP 2013
Inviting aromas of spiced cherries and black fruits complement undertones of tobacco and dried plums. It is a full-bodied wine, warm and soft on the palate with flavors that continue to evolve into the finish.
Joel Gott Zinfandel 2014 – Wine Enthusiast: 90pts – Exceptional Value – http://www.winemag.com/buying-guide/joel-gott-2014-zinfandel-california
This is a full-bodied but also subtle and complex-flavored wine. The aromas bring in mild wood smoke and black-pepper notes, then the flavors add ample fruitiness without going to jamminess. The overall effect is one of sophistication.
The Spur 2011/2013

Scented cherries, pomegranate, rhubarb, pepper spice. Cherry jam on entry, lively acid, fruit-covered tannins, sweet oak finish.
Aromas of ripe dark pitted fruits, bittersweet chocolate and a hint of lightly toasted oak come forth. A first taste reveals the wine’s pronounced and richly structured flavors. This is followed by long, lingering layers of exceptionally elegant tannins.
Catena Alta Malbec 2011
Aromas of ripe red and black berry fruits with notes of violets and lavender and hints of leather and a touch of spices. Full bodied and rich, with sweet tannins and a smooth structure, offering multiple layers of blackberries and black currant with hints of licorice, vanilla, and black pepper.
