Choosing A Wine Retailer

What are the signs of a good Wine Retailer?
We asked the wine experts and here's what they said...

...if your wine retailer doesn't take the time to ask important questions when replying to your inquiry, it could mean they are not a reliable authority for your wine selection.

There are reasons why you and your wine retailer should become well-acquainted.  For example, if they appear disinterested in your inquiries and special requests, or when you have questions about what wine to serve with a particular meal, then chances are they are not wine connoisseurs themselves, which could be cause for concern.

How can you know for sure that your wine retailer is knowledgeable and dedicated to providing good wine service?  Here is a brief test you can use when visiting your various retail options:

How is the wine stored?

A good wine retailer will always try to store wine on its side, which is the proper way to assure quality and moisture.  If the wine has been stored in the upright position, lay on its side for at least 24 hours before serving.

What is the temperature in the wine storage area?

A good wine retailer will not store wine in too warm an area, and fine wines will be kept in a temperature controlled storage unit.

Is the store's wine inventory adequate?

Your wine retailer should keep a varied selection of imported and domestic wines on hand, and should also be eager to check the availability of your special requests.

Does your wine retailer seem knowledgeable about wine?

If you are unsure of your purchase, you should feel confident asking your wine retailer for a recommendation.  A good wine retailer will ask you some basic questions about the meal you will be serving in order to better recommend a suitable wine.  A brief explanation of the meal and your particular preferences should be all they need to make a suggestion.  If after your meal you and your guests are displeased with your wine retailer's recommendation, be sure to let them know so that they don't misinform another client.
